Doppler....Good or Evil?

So our home doppler arrived on Friday. We got the Hi Be-be doppler and it says it is supposed to pick up a heart beat "as early as 10-12 weeks". We tried it at 10 weeks and 3 days, no heart beat (except mine!). I know that it was mine since it was only between 60 and 70 bpm. But why the heck can I hear my heart beating in my pelvis? I don't know maybe a vein or something? Anyways, now after trying it 3 times (twice at 10 weeks 3 days and once 10 weeks 4 days) I'm not freaking out yet but I'm realizing that maybe this "comfort toy" we got will end up causing more anxiety! I'm already a bit panicky since since my u/s on Tuesday I have started feeling better, my boobs hurt much less, i have way more energy (I even biked to work on Thurs and Friday and Joe and I went to the gym yesterday and tomorrow we are planning a big bike ride!) . I haven't felt this good in 2 months! So, couple that with the lack of heart beat finding and I'm starting to feel "not pregnant". I'm trying to tell myself it is still early to find the heartbeat, and i'm almost through the first trimester so maybe that is why my symptoms are improving. I just hate not knowing what is going on in there and I thought this silly doppler would solve all of my problems! Silly me! I did luckily move up my OB appt to May 31st when I will be 11 weeks and 6 days. I want to go then because I only have progesterone suppositories for up to 12 weeks and I don't know if I can just stop them at 12 weeks or if we have to wean off of them or what. So I need some OB opinions! Also hoping I'll get him to teach me to use my doppler and get an u/s as well. I'm really excited for that appt. Apparently it is going to take up to 2 hours so i had to take a half day off work...I just told my boss it was a follow up appt to my "problem " a couple weeks ago. We have started telling more people the big news! It's actually pretty fun! Joe told one friend, I told one friend and we told our parents and siblings and a couple aunts too. I feel silly telling though because I don't feel that pregnant (aside from the fact that my pants are becoming very uncomfortable!). The worst thing I hate to hear so far: "oh ya, I can kind of tell.." or "ya, its kind of showing in your face!" WTF! How is my face showing? At only almost 11 weeks pregnant the last thing I want to hear is that you can tell I'm preggers. I can't wait for the actual baby belly to bust out! Dying to be pregnant and not just fat! ahhh.....so many wonderful things to look forward to!
Anyhow, I need to get back to marking my 235 IB math exam papers! UGH! Luckily tomorrow is a holiday in Canada so I have an extra play day to make up for all of the marking I did this weekend!

Enjoy Victoria day all of my Canadian buddies! And US buddies...next week is your turn!!!

  1. Are those Dopplers super expensive? If you dont ming me asking :) Ive been hearing about them a lot. And I'm a afraid once we are pregs again, I'm going to have one fed exed overnight to me, to try to calm anxiety but then end up confused like you are! Wish I could give you some advice on those. Enjoy Victoria Day! :) Just try and think positively about the lack of preg symptoms...maybe you'll get lucky and have an easy pregnancy! :) Can't wait to hear about your OB appt.

  2. Happy Victoria Day! Whatever that is... :)

I think it's totally fine you don't have pregnancy symptoms anymore, don't they usually go away after 10-12 weeks? Sounds like you're right on schedule!

  3. I just wanted to let you know that I have a doppler and I'm at 36 weeks with a baby who takes up my whole tummy and I STILL can't find her heartbeat sometimes. I honestly can't imagine how anything but the hospital grade rentals could pick up a heartbeat at 10-12 weeks.

I also wanted to let you know that at 14 weeks I totally lost all my symptoms. I freaked out and went in to get a u/s and everything was fine. So I wouldn't be scared because of losing your symptoms, it probably doesn't mean anything.

    Good luck!

  4. When I was pregnant with both my girls, I used a doppler. I definitely could not find a heartbeat until at least 11 weeks... And even then, I literally had to take the 'probe' and put it right above my pubic bone and press it down into my belly, almost pointing toward my bottom. Kinda awkward, but it worked. The baby is so little, and so far down, still, that you have to really focus the probe down 'there'... :) And holding it still, and moving VERY slowly helps too.

Hope you have some luck with it later!

  5. I wouldn't worry about not hearing the H.B yet - I'm sure it's there and I would ask your doc to show you how to find it. *hugs* Enjoy your weekend!

  6. I've always read that symptoms come and go, especially toward the second trimester. Don't let the doppler stress you out too much - it will be working consistently in no time!
    Happy Victoria Day!

  7. Hmmm, well you'll have to keep us posted about the doppler. I've read many different things about how early it actually works, but maybe your OB will give you some tricks you can then share with us. I know I'll freak if I don't find anything...so hubby is debating if this is a good idea for my crazy head! I can't believe you're almost in the 2nd trimester...go you!!!

  8. Hi, just stumbled upon your blog from My Basic World...have been trying to find more pg blogs to read! Wanted to say congrats!

As for the doppler, I have one and it has been both a blessing and a curse. I first heard the baby at around 11 weeks, maybe 12. I'm now 18 and it takes me a bit to find the hb sometimes, other times I pick it up on the first try. For me, though, in the end it has been a lifesaver. We lost a baby in December, so having the doppler on days when I feel scared or anxious has been reassuring. I was in tears a few times when I couldn't find it, but then after enough time, you get music to your ears and it's all worth it!

Soon, you'll be able to pick it up a lot more often and you can really distinguish the baby's hb from yours. It's much quicker and not as whooshy.

Good luck! Looking forward to following along more often!
